Jorge Cervantes developed his lifelong fascination with cannabis as a university student in Mexico. After graduation, he moved to California and became a guerrilla grower of “sinsemilla” (Spanish for without seeds) marijuana, the “new” high-quality cannabis that Mexicans reserved for domestic consumption. In the early 1980s, Cervantes started growing indoors, but a lack of credible information about indoor cultivation led him to author Indoor Marijuana Horticulture in 1983. The book became an instant best-seller, and successful indoor growers dubbed it the “Indoor Grower’s Bible.” Today growers simply call it “The Bible.” Cervantes is a world-renowned expert on indoor, outdoor, and greenhouse cannabis cultivation. Cervantes loves the Mediterranean Sea. He continues to photograph and write about cannabis as well as travel the world to research this plant.

The Bible

Jorge Cervantes first published the book Indoor Marijuana Horticulture in 1983. That first edition was 96 pages, bound by staples, and printed in black and white. Now in its fifth edition, with 512 full-color pages and 1120 full-color photographs and illustrations, Marijuana Horticulture: The Indoor/Outdoor Medical Grower’s Bible is the most complete cultivation book available. Marijuana Horticulture sold over 600,000 copies printed in Dutch, English, French and German. Marijuana Horticulture has just been released in Spanish and Italian and will soon be available in Russian.

The book’s credits list more than three hundred contributors and reads like a “Who’s Who?” in the world of cannabis cultivation. Any grower, casual or serious, will find hours of instruction and assistance within the Bible’s pages. Although some growers believe his book to contain some problems and incorrect information, no one has yet been able to offer the correct information for verification.

In his monthly question-and-answer column, Jorge's Rx, the flagship of High Times magazine's cultivation section, Cervantes provides his solutions to growers problems. He also pens a regular column in Soft Secrets magazine. High Times and Soft Secrets boast the highest circulation in North America and Europe. The “Bible” has gone through a complete metamorphosis since the first edition in 1983. The First Edition was just 96 pages, black and white and bound with a pair of staples. I wrote the book on a Kaypro II computer. The typeset “galleys” were pasted up into “hard copy”. I printed the book on a Multilith press. My wife and I collated pages and stapled them together to form the first Indoor Marijuana Horticulture book. The book immediately became a best-seller among indoor growers and has remained on top ever since!

The Second Edition (1985) grew to 288 pages and was christened “The Bible” by indoor growers. The Third Edition (1993) grew too 320 pages and the Fourth Edition (2001) tipped the scales at 432 pages and contained 200 color photos and drawings. The Bible is published in Dutch, German, french, English, and Spanish. There is also a special UK Edition. The Australian Edition was banned by the Australian Government, but lofty Auzzies still find ways to bring in the Bible.

The Fifth Edition has a little larger format (6 x 8.25 inches [150 x 210 cm]), 512 pages and is full-color throughout with more than 1100 full color photographs, drawings, charts, and graphs. It is completely rewritten to reflect the changes in cannabis cultivation and medicine in recent years. Sections on medical cannabis, seeds, seedlings, vegetative growth, cloning, flowering, breeding and hash have been amplified substantially. All-new sections have been added on greenhouses and outdoor growing. Photos and precise color drawings augment text to simplify information so that it is easier to assimilate.

Digital cameras, fast computers, with big hard disks, and fast internet connections have transformed the Bible into a much more complete work.
